Message From the President

In the three years that I have been a member of the Pioneer Humane Society, and past two years as President of the Board, I have had very mixed emotions. First, I am greatly cheered by the gains we have made with our spay-neutering programs, our scheduled humane educational program for regional elementary students, and most of all, the progress we have made with the current animal shelter planning and design.

On the other hand, I am highly disheartened at the numbers of homeless dogs and cats that still roam the region, the seemingly indifference of area officials and residents to cooperatively solve the many ongoing humane-related problems, and for the lack of widespread support for building and operating the much needed animal shelter.

It has been nearly 3 decades since past president Rose Hoosier and a small group of people who cared enough came to the aid of an injured mule while no one else seemed to care about the poor critter 's plight. From that show of caring originated the region 's first humane society when in 1975 the group formed a non-profit organization with the mission to care for animals in need along with addressing humane-related problems throughout the area. In 1998, the PHS Board campaigned for a county-wide ordinance and dog licensing, but made little gain, partly because there was no facility to house the lost, injured, and homeless pets. A capital campaign was started that same year, resulting in some generous donations from area residents, but support was not widespread enough to come anywhere close to funding the planned shelter. Now, with a new board of directors, we are committed to seeing that Rose Hoosier 's dream comes true.

With a successful capital campaign to fund the shelter, we will finally be able to provide safe and compassionate care for the needy pets along with carrying on with our other services and programs. Our board members all are volunteering their time to make the needed changes, but, to be successful we need a great deal of help from people like you.

Please continue to take pride in our regional community events and programs by helping with the new Animal Shelter. Become a Best Friend Patron by selecting a Shelter Naming Opportunity of your choice, or otherwise pledge your support with a generous donation today.

Thank you for your consideration,

Carol M Speed
PHS President
